Why overlays don't protect you (and what does)

Accessibility overlay widgets (accessiBe, UserWay, AudioEye) claim to make sites compliant with one line of JavaScript. Courts disagree. If you're looking for a real AccessiBe alternative, you need actual issue detection — not a band-aid widget.

Not a legal defense. Multiple courts have ruled overlays do not constitute reasonable ADA accommodation. The DOJ has stated overlays are insufficient.

Can make things worse. Overlays can break screen readers, trap keyboard focus, and introduce new barriers that weren't there before.

Target for lawsuits. Plaintiff firms specifically look for overlay widgets as a signal that the site has known issues but hasn't been properly remediated.

Fix the actual issues. AccessiDrop identifies what's broken in your HTML so you can fix it properly. That's what ADA compliance actually requires — real remediation, not cosmetic patches.

Frequently asked questions

What does AccessiDrop scan for?

AccessiDrop uses axe-core (the industry standard) to check your site against WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria — the same standard referenced in ADA lawsuits. It catches missing alt text, poor color contrast, keyboard navigation issues, form label problems, and 80+ other accessibility rules. Every issue includes a plain-English explanation and a link to the relevant WCAG success criterion.

How is this different from accessibility overlays like accessiBe?

Overlays add a widget on top of your site that claims to fix issues automatically. Courts have repeatedly ruled these overlays are NOT sufficient for ADA compliance, and they can actually make things worse by breaking screen readers. AccessiDrop is a real AccessiBe alternative: instead of masking problems, we find the actual issues in your code so you can fix them at the source. That's what courts consider genuine remediation.

Do I need to install anything on my site?

No. AccessiDrop scans your site externally — like a user visiting in a browser. No JavaScript snippet, no server access, no code changes needed to start monitoring. Just add your URL and we handle the rest.

How often does it scan?

Free: one-time scan. Pro and above: weekly automated scans with email alerts when new issues are found. You can also trigger on-demand scans anytime from your dashboard. Weekly scans mean you catch regressions quickly — not months later when a demand letter arrives.

Can I white-label reports for my clients?

Yes! Agency plans include white-label PDF compliance reports. Upload your logo and set your brand name. When you hand the report to a client, they see your agency's branding — not ours. It's designed to look like your own in-house service.

Is AccessiDrop enough for full ADA compliance?

Automated scanning catches the majority of common WCAG violations — the issues that trigger most lawsuits. A 100 score means no automated rule violations were detected, which is a strong baseline. For complete compliance, we recommend pairing automated monitoring with periodic manual testing (like keyboard-only navigation and screen reader checks). AccessiDrop handles the automated half continuously.

What websites can AccessiDrop scan?

Any publicly accessible website. Static sites, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, custom apps — if a browser can load it, we can scan it. We render pages with a real Chromium browser, so JavaScript-heavy SPAs work too.

How is the accessibility score calculated?

The score starts at 100 and is reduced based on the number and severity of issues found. Critical issues (e.g., images without alt text) reduce the score more than minor issues (e.g., redundant ARIA attributes). The formula weights severity: critical (-5), serious (-3), moderate (-2), minor (-1), capped at 0.

Can my clients see their own reports?

Currently, reports are generated and downloaded by the account holder (you, the developer or agency). You share PDFs with clients directly. We're evaluating a client-facing portal for a future release.

What happens if I exceed my site limit?

Free accounts are limited to 1 site. Pro to 1 site with full monitoring. Agency plans support 10 sites, Agency Plus supports 25. If you need more, contact us — we're happy to work out custom pricing for larger agencies.
